Keep Your Memories Alive: Print Them Out

Over the weekend while waiting for the computer to download a large file, I looked at some family pictures stored in the hard drive. I was amazed by the number of pictures we have accumulated over the years; and then I realized how easily these memories can be erased by a virus or a computer crash. I have never backed them up nor have I made any prints so I decided to take matters in my own hand.
Digital albums – a collection of digital pictures stored either in your computer’s hard drive or in a recordable CD are the most efficient way to store your photos because you not only preserve their quality, you can also store thousands of images in them. Without a doubt, technology has revolutionized how you can capture your daughter’s birthday party without spending a lot.
The downside of storing them digitally is you do not get to appreciate them as you would if you had printouts. Printouts are there for everyone to see. They can be stored safely to preserve them and they can also be organized for easy referencing. An organized album in a folder presentation printing is easier to show to friends or visitors than to carry the slimmest laptop.
Here’s what I did:
First, I scanned the photos and tried to remember the events. Normally, there is a software program that accompanies your digital camera. You can use this software to organize the pictures according to folders. You can either do it chronologically (by year or month) or you can do it by events. I did mine using the events approach so it would be easier to classify them and retrieve them in the future.
Second, I printed them handout style with four images per sheet. I decided not to cut them because their size would not matter anyway. What is more important is that I have a printout of the pictures.
Third, I got a folder printing and organized them according to the event: Trip to San Francisco 2006; Phuket Holiday 2009; Jake’s Birthday Party 1995. With these classifications, it would be easier for me to retrieve them for show-and-tell in the future.
Finally, I made elaborate label prints. I put a picture of Bali in front of my folder presentation printing to queue me that this is the folder during our vacation to Bali in 2010. Jake’s picture blowing a cake on his birthday is the one in front of another folder printing.
More than the pictures what you are organizing, here is a lifetime of memories that cannot be reproduced if something suddenly happens to your digital files.
