How to successfully pitch a reporter to get interviewed and obtain media coverage

How to Successfully Pitch a Reporter to Get Interviewed and Obtain Media Coverage

When I was up against a book deadline and needed a couple of people to interview who had achieved business results from podcasting, I put out a call through a service called Help a Reporter Out (www.helpareporter.com). This free service functions very much like paid reporter lead services such as Profnet or Travel Publicity Leads. Generally media people put out such calls either when they need interview leads extremely soon (like a deadline in two days) or when they have rather unusual interview needs that can’t be satisfied through the usual channels (such as looking for someone who has diabetes, owns pets and is gay or lesbian).

Someday you may be in a position to pitch a reporter, so I’d like to help you understand what to do and what not to do in this situation, and why, so you can seize the opportunity to meet the reporter’s needs and receive valuable media coverage. Here is the meat of the request I made:

“Need phone interviews by end of the week with 3 podcasters who can cite specific, tangible business results achieved through podcasting. Tell me briefly the topic of your podcast, your URL, your results and your phone number. Thanks.”

I received 30 replies. Of these, five stood out as excitingly fulfilling my criteria. At least half of the rest put themselves completely out of the running by ignoring my stated requirements, while several others were wasting their time and mine in their reply for other reasons.

I’m not sure how I could have been more clear and explicit about what information I wanted from respondents in order to screen them. I said I wanted potential interviewees to tell me the “specific, tangible business results achieved through podcasting.” Anyone who did not say exactly how they’d gotten new opportunities or earned money from their podcast got eliminated. Perhaps they had a great story to tell, but they hadn’t pre-qualified themselves with me to tell it. Instead they said, in effect, “I’m the one you want. Call me.” One wrote, “We are number 1 in the world, business results are amazing. I am so busy I would rather speak on the phone.” As far as I’m concerned, that’s hot air and does not show willingness to help me with my story.

This may sound “Mickey Mouse,” but whatever details are in the reporter’s request are there for a reason, and it doesn’t work to ignore them. I saw much the same thing happen when I judged a couple of business contests. The application form asked several questions that numerous otherwise appealing candidates left blank. These people were disqualified. The time and in some cases money they’d spent entering the contest was for naught.

Besides those who neglected to specify their podcasting results, a few people wasted their time by sending me contact information for someone who they said met my criteria, such as their boss, their client or someone they knew of from afar. For someone on a tight deadline who receives sufficient responses directly from interviewees, this doesn’t work, either. From the underling or PR representative’s suggestion, I have no way of knowing whether or not their referral is actually available to talk during my time frame. If you know of someone who fits a reporter’s request, always forward it to that person and urge them to respond right away instead of replying on their behalf.

Another bunch of people wasted their time writing to me because they did not have a podcast of their own but rather provided podcasting services for a fee. I’d said, “Tell me briefly the topic of your podcast,” and they’d violated that portion of my request.

One of the top five respondents whom I emailed back right away to set up a time to talk by phone took more than 24 hours to reply. “Sorry, your email landed in my spam folder,” he said. “Here’s when I’m available today.” Unfortunately, by then I’d already completed the interviews I needed. Unfortunately too for another respondent who met all of my criteria: He initiated contact after I’d finished all the interviews.

My advice on getting publicity by replying to reporters’ requests boils down to this: Reply promptly. Explicitly address the stated criteria in your reply. Volunteer only yourself. Check for the reporter’s email or phone call so you can follow through on having caught his or her interest.

Paradoxically, by treating the media person as a prince or princess, you position yourself to become a star.

How to use the law of attraction to create a fun and exciting retirement

How To Use the Law of Attraction To Create A Fun and Exciting Retirement

One of my friends recently held a best-and-final inventory close-out sale for her fireplace shop. The economy hadn’t been kind to her over the last three years, and it was heartbreaking to watch her fears accumulate as she thought of how to continue to support herself when her business of 33 years was no longer there. She needed to find a job for retirees, something ideal as a part time job for herself that would be ideal for retirees.

Using the Law of Attraction

I know that using the Law of Attraction to create her next business opportunity would be a wise way to open herself up to the good that can happen to her. I think of this Law as the invisible power behind all that happens in our lives. I know that harnessing its power to create what you want, to have your own desires manifest in the way that you’d most like, is eminently doable. It’s simply a matter of observing and then governing the manner in which we think. And if you’d enjoy creating a Law of Attraction career, understanding how your thought makes this law work can be most important.

Defining the Law of Attraction

The Law of Attraction is today’s name for The Law of Cause and Effect. It sometimes looks as if things, events, and people come into our life from the outside of ourselves, in. The truth is, that we are actually creating those things with our thinking and they are being expressed (or, pressed out) from inside of us with our thought process.

It’s true that “what you think is what you get.” The words may seem trite but they pack a wallop of a message, because they contain the meaning of the Law of Cause and Effect or today’s Law of Attraction. Each of us is a thinker. We have been from the get go. Our thoughts have evolved from a simple “I am alive” to the more complex processes we go through now as adults.

We think in a three-step process, and this is the reason you’ll find so many things in our earth experience appearing in a trinity. They’re manifesting from what is our nature, out into our daily lives. When this trinity of thinking begins, you have a desire that wells up from inside of you. Instantaneously, the second part of the trinity happens – you begin to think about your desire. As you think through the process, you eventually come to a conclusion and this is the third part of the trinity. It’s also the part where the “magic” of the Law of Attraction happens and what you wanted in your desire, plus what you thought about it and came to a decision about, actually appears in your life.

You Can Only Think One Thought At A Time

One of the nicest, easiest parts about the Law of Attraction is that you can only think one thought at a time. It is our nature for things to happen easily, and only having to think one thought surely is easy. But the next nicest thing is that we can choose which thought to think! We can choose to think happy thoughts, sad thoughts, loving thoughts, angry thoughts, etc. I realize that you may think those thoughts happen automatically, but if you look more closely, you’ll see how your choice is in there. And that’s one of the greatest parts about the Law of Attraction: you can choose which one thought you will think! So if, like my retiring friend, you want a part time job, you can choose to think “I am attracting the perfect part-time job for retirees right now.” There is no limit to what you can choose to think for or about yourself.

What You Resist, Persists

I know how doubt can insidiously snake it’s way through your heart and mind. I know how you can craft arguments as to why the Law of Attraction can’t possibly work for you. I want to share this with you: whatever you are absolutely convinced about is what you get in your life. So, if you think this Law won’t work for you, it works by not working! And if you think it will work for you, it works by working. I cannot imagine why you wouldn’t want to test this and see if I’m right about this. Why not use a tool that can make your life easier – find that new job, gain a group of clients whom you’ll love – rather than hunkering down and be fiercely determined this doesn’t work? If you are able to reason about your doubts, and if you can tell yourself that it is okay to be successful, you will be, and I would personally love that.

Be Appreciative Now

If you want a wonderfully practical way to test The Law of Attraction to see if it has any validity, I’ve got a great proposal for you. Begin today to meander through all the areas of your life and jot down some notes for things for which you are grateful. Go ahead. It’s painless! How about that nice toaster that made you toast for breakfast? Aren’t you grateful for it? And the convenience of having a pantry in your kitchen? And the love of your pets when you feed them? What about the afghan you have on your leather chair so the shock of sitting down on these chilly mornings is eliminated?

Do you see what I mean? Just the everyday things that are there that you don’t normally think about, but you use them all the time. If you will make a list of all that you are grateful for, here’s what will really be happening:

* You’ll be thinking thoughts of gratitude.

* You’ll become convinced that you have a great deal to be grateful for.

* Your conviction will begin to formulate into more things for which you can then be grateful, and if my experience is anything to lean on, one of those things will be your new part time job for as a retiree.

If you follow my suggestions, you’ll be putting the Law of Attraction into use toward your career. Your business opportunities will blossom into that part time job for retirees you so desire, and I know that many other opportunities to use this law will occur to you in the process of your life itself.

How to make money in your neighborhood

How to Make Money in Your Neighborhood

Most of the time when it comes to making money it seems that people forget about their neighbors. Well the fact of the matter is that your very own neighbors can become a very lucrative investment in making money. Not only will this create a sense of community with your neighbors but it will allow you to actually talk to the people that surround you day in and day out. I noticed this the first time when an older gentleman that lived down the street from me approached me about house sitting for him. My first impression was “why me, why not a high school kid that lives down the street or the paper boy”. He wanted someone that was older and more mature to trust and actually be responsible for holding the key to his home. He did not have any close family to house sit why he was going to be in Europe so he said I would be doing him a huge favor. I didn’t mind watering his garden and, mowing the lawn for two weeks and picking up his mail and newspaper ect. It was only two houses away from mine and I did that kind of stuff around my house anyway so it would not be much more work for me to do one more house.
After the two weeks had passed we had arranged for me to turn in his key to him a day after he got back. Truth be told he seemed a little on the cheap side to me so I did not expect to get anything for doing him this favor, it was just a favor. I was surprised to find out that he was so pleased that he handed me an envelope with $500 in it. I tried to return it and tell him it was no big deal but he insisted and would he offended if I didn’t take it.
The next week I was approached by another neighbor around the corner from me who asked if I would be willing to do the same thing for her. Apparently my neighbor was so pleased with the work I had done around his house for him (trimming plants, watering, mowing, and bringing in the paper and mail) that he had been telling everyone he talked to what a great job I had done. She said she would pay me $1,000 up front for a week her family was going on vacation. That entire summer I would come home from work and I found myself home sitting for 8 of my neighbors. I made $7,800 over 3 months just doing basic house chores with the occasional neighbor that requested feeding and walking of the family pet. This was a great way to not only get to know my neighbors and help them out but also make some pretty good money. Ever since then I have always been the go to guy to take care of their homes in any situation. Still today at least once a month I get calls asking if I could do some kind of chore to help or to house sit. By doing this I have created a sense of community and trust among the people that live in our community. They know they can always depend on me. I also can’t complain about the average $850 a month that I’m making by doing simple things for people in my neighborhood. I would recommend to get out there and talk to your neighbors it can do wonders for your money making.

Is the ebay fee increase actually good for business

Is The eBay Fee Increase Actually Good For Business?

Much of my email from readers this month concerned the recent announcement from eBay that it will increase many seller fees on February 18, 2005. Since many business people use eBay’s online store system as their primary ecommerce point of sale, it’s no surprise that most of the emails I received were of the angry variety.

One email in particular caught my attention because it urged me to visit a website to sign an online petition protesting the fee hike. The email directed me to http://www.petitiononline.com and upon further investigation I found that 22,548 digital signatures had already been collected (as of this writing).

Thank goodness not all of them had my email address.

This will be the fifth rate hike in as many years for the auction giant and should really come as no surprise. Price hikes are a normal course of business. It was the size of the hike that has many sellers upset.

The rate hike involved the following fees:

  • A basic eBay Store will now cost sellers $15.95 a month, a 60% increase from the current $9.95 a month.
  • Closing commissions on most items sold through eBay Stores will increase by 50 percent.
  • Gallery photo fees will increase from 25 to 35 cents.
  • The Buy It Now fee will jump from a flat fee of 5 cents to 10 cents for items priced over $10 and 25 cents for items over $50.
  • Final value fees will rise from 5.25% to 8%.

Many of the emails I received pointed out that small sellers are making very little profit as it is so the increase in fees will only serve to drive these sellers completely out of the eBay business. Some sellers accuse eBay of purposefully trying to run them off, but I doubt that’s the case. eBay has no reason to drive away the small sellers, but that realization never occurs to those who feel they are being priced out of the market.

Not everyone is too concerned over the fee increase. Jim Cockrum, eBay Powerseller, publisher of “Creative eBay Selling News,” the world’s largest newsletter on creative eBay selling, and author of one of the best selling eBay books of all time “The Silent Sales Machines Hiding On eBay” has other opinions.

“I don’t see the eBay fee increase as a bad thing,” Cockrum said in a phone interview. “I actually see it as just the opposite – it’s a good thing because eBay is eliminating my competition for me. Who leaves eBay when eBay increases seller fees? It’s not the customers (or shoppers). They don’t go anywhere since they aren’t affected. Only a handful of the weaker sellers leave eBay when fees go up.”

Cockrum recommends that sellers use eBay in non-traditional ways to build their online businesses so that future fee hikes will not have an affect on their e-business.

“Selling on eBay continues to be one of the more popular ways to make money online, though very few people are getting rich with an eBay business alone,” Cockrum said. “Many Powersellers don’t make enough profit to cover their costs. The key to really making money with eBay is not in selling items at auction, but to use eBay to drive customers to your other online ventures. If you do that, the rate hikes do not affect your bottomline nearly as much.”

Not everyone shares Cockrum’s enthusiasm. Many small sellers think the government or a regulatory board of some kind should get involved to help keep eBay fees in line. This probably won’t come to pass anytime soon, but who knows. I can remember when a little company called Microsoft had free rein before they killed off all comers and came to monopolize their market. eBay seems to be headed in the same direction.

The threat of regulation may be the reason eBay is now attempting to smooth the ruffled feathers of the miffed masses. eBay announced this week that they would give a one-time $15.95 credit to eBay store owners and reduce minimum listing fees for inexpensive items from 30 cents to 25 cents, effective immediately.

Too little, too late? Could be. Many sellers believe that eBay may be writing its own obituary with such stringent price increases and such little thought for the smaller merchant. The online petition predicted the long term effects of the fee increase to be:

  • Smaller sellers will stop selling on eBay and try to sell somewhere else online. They will never have the chance to expand themselves on eBay.
  • Larger sellers may consider starting their own online store or sell elsewhere.
  • Prices of auctions will increase. Buyers will turn back to retail stores. The idea of eBay is that you can find things cheaper there, even when adding shipping and handling together.
  • Discourage new sellers, decreasing competition (which is what the eBay market thrives on for pricing).

Only time will tell if the predictions come true, but for the short term many smaller sellers are closing down their eBay stores and moving up the street to Yahoo.com.

Here’s to your success!
